Out & About
Reno Addendum In February I represented Nevada PVA at the NMEDA Conference, as well as the RERC on Wheelchair Trasportation Safety, hosted by Miriam Manary, Senior Engineering Research Associate, University of Michigan Transportation Research Insitutue. The objectives were how to define where and how personal injuries for those driving from wheelchairs, or are passengers in wheelchairs in privately owned vehicles are sustained, and the means to address this in design. This was the second of three conferences in the series. The goal is to merge existing standards and identify crash failures of wheelchairs, to arrive at a Universal Design Standard for most, if not all types of transporation. NMEDA has its own standards for crash sustainability, but there are others than conflict with them. Currently, most of these standards are goals, not design criteria, but common standards of crash sustainability for the chair (seat, seat attachements, etc.) are the goal. With summer around the corner, those wanting quality trigger time with their favorite rifle once again moves to the forefront. Adaptive Appleseed(AAS) is set to go full bore in April. My team and I have written a set of "entry regulations" for both shooters and AS Staff. Now all disabled folks shoot free, and so will husbands of deployed wives. There is some interest in making AAS part of the Wounded Warrior Project. This is being looked into at Walter Reed Army Hospital and Fort Bliss, TX. To find a shoot near you go to APPLESEEDINFO.ORG Southern Nevada there is an Appleseed at Boulder CIty, April 17-18, get out, do some quality trigger time and meet some new folks.
